    Step Up to Masters

The article in question introduces research conducted by the Learning Development Team at the University of Leeds on the academic literacy skills development needs and expectations of taught postgraduate students, and the subsequent creation of an innovative new online resource, Step Up to Masters. As well as focusing on key topics highlighted by the research, the resource encourages students to reflect on their individual development priorities and to select the most relevant support options for their successful transition to taught postgraduate (PGT) study. The rationale behind this reflect and select approach has been informed by a synthesis of (a) the outcomes of key studies on the diverse needs and challenges faced by PGT students when making the transition to Masters study, and (b) the team’s own research findings on PGT students’ academic development priorities and preferences. Step Up to Masters received the Digital Award for Information Literacy 2020, and was central to the online PGT induction programme initiated at Leeds for 2020/21 in response to the coronavirus pandemic.&nbsp

Traditionally, didactic dictionaries were considered as the simplifications of general dictionaries. A series of more targeted dictionaries can be derived from a general dictionary, among which there was no lack of one for users who were in a process of learning the language. However, with the evolution of lexicography, these solutions are no longer satisfactory, since dictionaries are expected to respond to the specific needs of each type of user. For Spanish, there are two highly prestigious dictionaries from the SM publishing house, the Clave, which is a general dictionary, and the Dictionary of Spanish for Foreigners, between which a clear relationship has been identified. In order to figure out the criteria that is applied when compiling a learning dictionary from a general one, a comparative study is conducted from the 5% voice corpus of the two volumes. The statistic results demonstrate that the Spanish dictionary for foreigners is not only the simplification of the general dictionary, but also modified for second language learners specifically in both the macrostructure and microstructure.

Example in lexicographical theory and exemplification in SFL dictionaries

The lexicographic example, despite the fact that it is little studied compared to other components, is considered an element of extraordinary importance for serving as a model of use and at the same time illustrating the meaning of the word. The purpose of this paper is to present a theoretical summary of the lexicographical examples. In addition, a comparative analysis of four learner’s dictionaries is carried out to investigate how they conform to the theoretical approaches. To meet this goal, 5% of each dictionary under study is examined and the results expose the tendency of each dictionary when selecting the syntactic structure of the examples and the strategies used for the example to work properly for the decoding and encoding functions

    Tensor Regression

Regression analysis is a key area of interest in the field of data analysis and machine learning which is devoted to exploring the dependencies between variables, often using vectors. The emergence of high dimensional data in technologies such as neuroimaging, computer vision, climatology and social networks, has brought challenges to traditional data representation methods. Tensors, as high dimensional extensions of vectors, are considered as natural representations of high dimensional data. In this book, the authors provide a systematic study and analysis of tensor-based regression models and their applications in recent years. It groups and illustrates the existing tensor-based regression methods and covers the basics, core ideas, and theoretical characteristics of most tensor-based regression methods. In addition, readers can learn how to use existing tensor-based regression methods to solve specific regression tasks with multiway data, what datasets can be selected, and what software packages are available to start related work as soon as possible. Tensor Regression is the first thorough overview of the fundamentals, motivations, popular algorithms, strategies for efficient implementation, related applications, available datasets, and software resources for tensor-based regression analysis. It is essential reading for all students, researchers and practitioners of working on high dimensional data.Comment: 187 pages, 32 figures, 10 table

Improving the Performance of PCA-Based Chiller Sensor Fault Detection by Sensitivity Analysis for the Training Data Set

An improved approach of fault detection for chiller sensors is presented based on the sensitivity analysis for the original data set used to train the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) model. Sensor faults are inevitable due to the aging, environment, location and so on. Meanwhile, because of the wide range of operational conditions, the fault of a certain sensor is very difficult to be directly detected by its own historical data. PCA is a multivariate data-based statistical analysis method and it is very useful for the sensor fault detection in HVAC&R. The undetectable zone of a certain sensor by Q-statistic is derived from the definition of Q-statistic which is usually employed as a boundary to detect the sensor fault situation. Due to the similar style between Q-statistic and Hawkins’ TH2, the undetectable zone by Hawkins’ TH2 is also obtained. Undetectable zone is a predictive index to indicate the detectability of different sensors by different statistics. Since undetectable zone is the character of the original training data set, it can indicate the quality for the selected training data. One field data set is employed to validate the presented approach. Results show that the undetectable zone of a certain sensor by Q-statistic is quite different from that by Hawkins’ TH2. Therefore, the undetectable zone can be used to improving the performance of PCA-based chiller sensor fault detection by choosing different fault detection statistics with less undetectable zone for different sensor
